Our research focuses on exploring the lasting legacy of Plyler v. Doe on the academic performance of undocumented students, particularly at Drew University, and how their immigration status intersects with mental health, identity development, and societal stereotypes. This topic is important since it illuminates the challenges faced by undocumented students in the context of education, mental health, and cultural identity, highlighting how these challenges perpetuate inequality and limit opportunities for success. The effects of these systemic barriers resonate not only on a local level at Drew, but also nationally and globally, as they reflect broader issues of immigration policy, human rights, and access to education. Through this research, we aim to identify actionable recommendations for Drew University to enhance its support systems for undocumented students—such as mental health services and legal pathways to security—and to promote an inclusive and equitable campus culture.
