The Drew University Libraries believe it is the basic right of every individual to read what he/she wishes without fear of censure or legal consequence. It also affirms the right of every person to privacy.
The Drew University Libraries will do everything in their power to protect each user’s right to privacy with respect to all information required for registration and for information sought or received, and materials consulted, borrowed, or acquired in accordance with local, state and federal law.

Such records will not be made available to any individual, organization, or government agency except pursuant to N.J.S.A 18A:73-43.2 which reads: “Library records which contain the names or other personally identifying details regarding the users of libraries are confidential and shall not be disclosed except in the following circumstances:
Further, in keeping with N.J.S.A 18A:73-43.2, the Drew University Libraries will not ask a patron to waive his/her right to confidentiality and privacy.
Library staff are to refer all requests for confidential user records to the University Library Director or designee. The University Library Director will forward all requests from law enforcement or other government officials and all requests under applicable “open records” laws to University Counsel, and will consult with counsel regarding the proper response.
Library users who have questions, concerns, or complaints about the library’s handling of their personally identifiable data should file written comments with the University Library Director. We will respond in a timely manner and may conduct a privacy investigation or review our policy and procedures.
Exposure of confidential patron data may result in disciplinary action and/or sanctions by the University via the policies and procedures of the Offices of the Provost and Human Resources, and may be subject to further civil and/or criminal penalties.
