Using ScholarSearch

Reference this guide to learn how to use ScholarSearch, Drew University Library's discovery service.

Search Results

Once you submit your search, you will be presented with the results screen. There are a variety of ways that you can proceed from here. Reference the following annotated results page to learn what each feature does and how it can be beneficial to you in your research!

ScholarSearch results screen with numbered arrows pointing to the buttons explained in the following text.

  1. Filters: You can adjust your search results by applying filters. The most commonly used filters (Peer Reviewed (Scholarly) JournalsDate, and Source type) are displayed. To view all available filters, click All filters.
  2. Publication Placard: If your search is an exact match to the title of a publication (such as an academic journal), it will be shown in this box at the top of your search results. As you can see in this example, there are a total of twelve publications that match the search "entomology". By clicking the link in the box, you can view all of the matches.
  3. Research Starter Placard: Oftentimes, your search may retrieve a relevant Research Starter, displayed at the top of your results. Designed to enhance the research experience, Research Starters include links to relevant articles, images, videos, and audio clips. The content is curated from a variety of high-quality and authoritative sources to give you a quick yet reliable (and citable!) overview of the topic.
  4. Checkbox: You can manage (Download, Save, Share, or Cite) up to 50 records from the result list using the checkboxes and options at the top of your result list. When you export citations for up to 50 records, the downloaded file can be imported into bibliographic software, such as EndNote or Zotero.
    • If you use the checkbox at the top of the list, click the drop-down arrow to view the available options. You can select all results currently displayed in the list, none, or the first 50 results in the list, regardless of whether they are currently displayed or not. Then, select one of the available tools to manage your results: Download metadata, Save to the dashboard, Share via email or Google, Copy or export citations.
    • If you choose Save, your results are automatically saved to the Dashboard for the current session and no further action is needed. If you selected to Download, Share, or Cite, follow the prompts on the window that displays to finish managing your results.

  5. Bookmark/Save: This button allows you to save the result to your Dashboard. The icon turns blue to show you bookmarked the item and it's available in your Dashboard. Click it again to remove your bookmark.

  6. Tools Menu: Use the Tools button to add the item to your saved items, copy a citation of the material in one of several formats, add the article to a Project in your Dashboard, share a link to the article via email, or download the full text or a file containing the article’s citation information in one of several formats.

  7. Access Options: This button directs you to the full text of the item shown in the record. If there is only one full text option available, the button will display that option (as shown in this example search). If there are multiple options available, they will be listed. If there is no full text available, you will have the option to submit an Interlibrary Loan (also known as "ILL") request. For digital articles and book chapters, it usually only takes a few days to receive the material. Print books will take longer, usually up to two weeks. If we have a physical copy of the item available in the Library, you will have the option to place a hold on it. It will be brought to the Circulation Desk where you can then check the item out.

  8. View Details: Clicking this button brings you to a page with more information about the material. This page is called the Detailed Record.

  9. My Dashboard: The Dashboard is where you will find your Saved items and Projects you have created. When signed into ScholarSearch with your Personal User Account, items in your Dashboard are saved and can be accessed whenever you are signed in. For more information about this, visit the "My Dashboard" page of this guide.

  10. Research Tools: In this section, you will find buttons that allow you to create a new search, search or browse journals/publications, and create a concept map. For more information on concept maps, visit the "Concept Maps" page of this guide.
