Media at the Drew Library: Lumiere

Drew Library makes video and audio available in several formats, for use by students, faculty and staff. This Guide explains the options.

Whati is Lumiere?

Lumiere, free UC Berkeley Language Center resource, is a streaming collection of tagged foreign- and English-language films and clips. Instructors may apply for an account to use these materials as part of foreign language, film studies or other  courses.

This service is an alternative for streaming films that are unavailable on platforms like Kanopy or Swank, provided the Library owns the DVD. Lumiere includes over 7,000 films, and we can request digital clips or full films if both the DVD and Lumiere's access exist. If we lack the DVD, it can be purchased for use with Lumiere. We may also request that Lumiere provide access to a film, if we have the DVD.

If you contact us to request a film, we will inform you of the option to obtain a streaming film link from Lumiere.

Use of materials must comply with Fair Use under U.S. Copyright Law, and access is limited to students via Moodle. To get started, request an account at Lumiere Application. You'll need to confirm compliance with Fair Use, provide your Drew email and department details, and select a teaching language.

Sumbitting Film requests in Lumiere

First, please email liborders@drew.edu to determine if we own the DVD, and if Lumiere owns the film.  We will mark the film as “owned” in Lumiere so you can request it. We will let you know when it has been marked as owned.  If we don’t have the DVD, we will purchase it. We can also ask Lumiere to add films.

Once the film is marked owned,  you may request the URL for the film.

Here is a video explaining the process

To request URLs through Lumiere for a course :

  1. Log into lumiere.berkeley.edu using your credentials
  2. Search for your film using the Browse tab or the Search tab, and select the title.(You can use CTRL F to search on the browse page)

  1. Click on film title
  2. On the right side of the page, under “Actions,” select “Add [your title] to order.”
  3. The page now reads, “Adding film to order,” and you are given choices. You can have your students view film data (title, director, short synopsis), they can view the film with stretched audio, which can be useful for language students especially, and there are mandatory selections for whether or not you want subtitles, student comments that you can choose to be viewed only by you or by you and the students in your class, and you must provide a short statement about how you are using this film.
  4. You can also select film terms, if you like, by clicking “Select film terms for this film.”
  5. Once you make those choices, click “Add to order.” Doing so adds the film to your cart, but does not produce a URL for your film yet.
  6. Now, you are in “Your Cart.” To the right, you have the option to edit, preview, annotate, or remove your order to start over. Otherwise…
  7. Your order is given a number, on the left where it says “Order name.” You can edit that field, and name your order anything you like.
  8. IMPORTANT!To the right of “Order name,” you have a drop-down menu that asks you how long you want to keep the film order. Next to “Order to expire in,” the default is two weeks, but if you click the box that says two weeks, you have choices on how long you want to keep the film.  You can keep the film for as little as one day or as much as 17 weeks.
  9. Once you have made that choice, click “Submit order.” Orders are normally filled within 24 hours. You will be notified via email from Lumiere when it is available. The URL will also be available on the “order history” page (Admin-instructor view- you/orders/order history). Refresh the screen after 30 minutes.

NOTE: URLs must be embedded in Moodle

PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT KJULIANO@DREW.EDU IF YOU HAVE ANY DIFFICULTIES WITH THIS PROCESS, OR  ANY QUESTIONS
